Five Quick & Engaging Blog Posts

blog post ideas

If you’re a fellow blogger I’m guessing you’re no stranger to writer’s block. If you, like me, keep a blog as a passion project it’s likely that by the time you get around to actually writing a post you’re burnt out. Working full-time, being a mother, whatever you do, it probably takes precedent over your little corner of the Internet! Sometimes thinking “I have no new photos,” “I have no time” or “I just don’t have any ideas” are excuses we use so we don’t have to write a blog post. I’m certainly guilty of it. This summer I went off the grid for weeks! And luckily, since this is a passion project, there’s no one getting mad at me for the site silence other than myself. But sometimes disappointing myself just isn’t OK. That’s why I vowed to get in a better writing schedule again, and you can, too! Today I’m sharing five (+1 bonus idea) quick, engaging blog post ideas.

  1. Repurpose content from your Instagram Stories. How many times have you done a series of videos and/or images on your Stories to help tell a true story? And how much quicker is doing something on a small phone screen than outlining it out for a blog post? Probably much quicker, but that doesn’t mean the content is any less valuable. Don’t let your content disappear after 24 hours. Help it live on by converting it to a blog format. You could screenshot your Stories (like I did here to recap the Rent the Runway sample sale) or use an app to string all of your saved videos together to embed in your blog. Add just a little additional context to the content you saved from Instagram Stories, and voilà, a new blog post!
  2. My Favorite (Finish the Sentence). Here’s an easy one. Think of your favorite beauty products, your favorite date night spots, your favorite ways to keep in touch with long distance friends. Have you shared them before? Whether the topic is general or niche, it’s sure to resonate with someone out there on the interweb, so it’s worth putting it to “paper.” Here’s an example of my post following this formula: My Favorite Things in 2017.
  3. Brainstorm how previously used images can support new topics. If your excuse is “I don’t have any photos for a blog post,” don’t let that hold you back! Who says you have to use only new photos for the rest of your blogging life? Think about the images you do have that you’re really proud of. If they’ve already been used once, what other kind of posts could they be used in? Examples posts in which I used the same photo for two different topics are this New Balance post and a post on my favorite podcasts.
  4. Crowdsource blog content from group texts, email chains or IRL conversations. How many group text chains are you on? I don’t know about you, but the ones I’m on with family and friends are chock full of content that make for a good blog post. For example, my college buddies’ conversation about shows we’re obsessed with can easily turn into a post on “The Top Shows to Stream Right Now.” If you don’t get inspiration from text buddies, crowd source elsewhere. Before I went to Europe, I asked in my out of office email for colleagues to share any tips they had for traveling the continent. I’m still planning to share their great advice on the blog.
  5. Do a round up of content you admire from other bloggers. A series I like to read on another blogger’s site is Bows and Sequins’ Friday Finds. Her weekly roundup always includes links to other bloggers’ content and a brief description of why it resonated with her. You can do the same to build an authentic community and give shout outs to your favorite bloggers – maybe they’ll return the favor! And for the bonus…
  6. Write a listicle about anything you’re an expert on. How do you think I came up with this post idea? I got one little seed in my head for myself, and then I decided I could easily turn it into a helpful post for others. There’s likely someone out there searching on Google for “blog post ideas,” and that’s just one of millions of queries. What else can you write about? Choose from anything like, the top photography tips, five things to remember to bring to your wedding, five steps to an organized closet. You’re the expert so by promising yourself you’ll keep the post short and to the most important points, the content should flow from your fingertips.

I hope some of these ideas will help creativity strike. Leave a post below if you use any of them. I’d love to read what you write!
