If you follow me on Instagram, by now you probably *get* that I like the Chicago River. I post a new photo of my view of it at least once a week on Stories. I certainly don’t mean to bombard you all with river content, but I just can’t get over how pretty it is! The sparkling water flagged by Chicago’s historic downtown has been a beautiful site for the last four years I’ve worked downtown. My office overlooks the Chicago River and I walk along it for several blocks of my commute home. My walks along the water, whether in the middle of the day or evening, are a peaceful time because they help me step away from work. I love relaxing by enjoying the buildings reflected in the water and people watching anyone who’s at the restaurants along the water. There are so many times I’ve looked down on the water and thought, man, I wish I could be on one of those boats. Yet aside from architecture cruises, I hadn’t been – until recently.

Chicago Water Taxi

Riding on the Chicago Water Taxi was one of those bucket list items for me. But unfortunately, because of where my apartment is in relation to my work, I’ve never had an excuse to take the taxi. Finally this year I decided I’d do it just for not, not necessity. Sarah came along and we had a great GNO on the river and then at a bar near one of the stops.

When we looked at the Chicago Water Taxi schedule I had no idea it’d be so convenient. Boats come every 10-15 minutes according to the stop and can get you from north of the city (Goose Island) to the loop to south (Chinatown). It’s relatively inexpensive, too. The $5 one-way ticket is not a costly way to see Chicago from a new vantage point! Sarah and I decided on the time we wanted to meet at the stop closest to our works, and we purchased tickets at the window. Chicago Water Taxi’s website had such clear instructions on their site that it made it easy for us to plan our evening.

We were going to go down to Chinatown but since the sky was threatening rain, we decided to do the shorter commute to Ogilvie, a Metra station in the West Loop. Fine by me because that’s within walking distance to my apartment! On the Chicago Water Taxi I was surprised to hear several people with accents on the boat. How had I lived in Chicago for seven years and never taken the taxi, when hear these (presumably) tourists had already figured out the great mode of transport? I made a mental note that next time I travel I’d research options beyond Uber.

I have such fond memories of lake days growing up in Michigan, and while I’m not claiming that the Chicago Water Taxi even came close to tubing behind a speedboat, it was a pretty fun way to switch up my normal commute home. It was an “adventure” for me, but I also know it’s a convenience for people’s commutes. If you live in Chicago or are visiting and haven’t taken the river transportation service, I challenge you to find at least one reason to ride it. Oh, and maybe get off at Ogilvie so you can also cap off a fun evening like Sarah and I did, with a drink and app at Slightly Toasted.
