In Celebration of National Library Week

best thriller books

Did you know that this week is National Library Week? I had to pay tribute to this because I’ve been a card holding member of the public library since I was a little child! I’ve always had a love for books, passed on by my mom. I know the library was also a place for my mom to get her three kids out of the house and attend activities I still have fond memories of. We had fun at library-sponsored play like book-themed Halloween parties (I loved my Alice in Wonderland costume!), summer reading contests and award parties, and Oregon Trail computer games(when I was older). Now as an adult, I take myself to the library often to pick up my next book on hold. Steve’s even gotten into the action. And since we’re both currently on a thrillers kick, I’m sharing some of the best thriller books we’ve read. No doubt you too can pick them up at your local library.

The Girl Before
So I promise not all of these books start with “The Woman” or “The Girl,” but I can’t ignore that this class of thrillers is good! I have a bad habit of reading ahead in thrillers, which I did with “The Girl Before.” Luckily, like every good thriller, reading just one or two pages out of order didn’t ruin anything for me. The characters in the book revealed multiple mysteries and choices, each with its own twist. Even the ending wasn’t simple. It left me creeped out, but in the good way I crave with this genre.

Sharp Objects is my favorite of Gillian Flynn’s three thrillers. I’ll warn you, it’s pretty graphic, but not as gory as Dark Places. What amazes me about Flynn’s books is the woman behind them. How does her brain work like that? So smart, but so, so disturbing! She’s a Chicago author and I’d love to meet her.

The Couple Next Door
This books really twists and turns until the very end. There are two couples next door, depending which side you’re looking at, and family involved in the story, so there are plenty of characters to consider in this whodunit. What I liked most about this book is that I could share it with my husband. Novels like “Gone Girl” don’t really resonate with him because of the female POV. But this was something he could pickup and enjoy from the third person multiple viewpoint.

The Husband’s Secret
I’ve read every one of Liane Moriarty’s books because I enjoyed “Big Little Lies” so much. The Husband’s Secret was another great one that she penned. There isn’t much violence or dangerous suspense, so it could be classified as a light thriller. Still, it’s ranked on my best thriller books list because of how one jolting letter has the potential to disrupt so many lives.

The Girl on the Train
Sorry, but here’s another “The Girl” title. This books has been out long enough for it to be made into a movie. If you only watched the movie, know that the book is so much better. Trust! It includes so many important details as to why the main character has become seemingly crazily obsessed with her ex. For more info, hop on over to the review Erin wrote for this blog.

These are just a few of the best thriller books I’ve read in recent years. I’ve been able to enjoy them all thanks to the Chicago Public Library. I’d love to hear you now – what some of your favorite genres and books?
