My RTR Experience

Rent-the-Runway-Reba-Dress-3I’ve been signed up for Rent the Runway (RTR) for more than four years, but it was just this past weekend that I finally rented a designer dress from the company. I was attending a fundraiser in Chicago for pediatric cancer patients and felt like everything hanging in my closet was tired and didn’t quite match the masquerade theme. Four nights beforehand, I decided to place my first RTR order. (I had a $20 credit because I referred a friend to the site, so that also helped make up my mind.)

I originally ordered the David Meister Gold Lela Lace Dress, requesting a free second size so that it was sure to fit. I had religiously read all of the reviews and was certain this would fit me well. On Friday I excitedly checked UPS tracking online to see if the dress has been dropped off at my apartment yet. I had a minor freak out moment when it said delivery had been delayed due to winter storms. I immediately emailed RTR customer service asking what they could do. Later that day, I received an email back saying they’d intercepted the dresses and changed it out for the Elie Tahari Reba Dress, which would arrive in time for the event. The RTR rep had chosen the Elie Tahari off of the wishlist I’d created specifically for the event.

I was a bit disappointed at first. I’d ultimately decided against the Reba Dress because the fit was too similar to another in my closet and it didn’t have the va-va-voom I wanted. Still, when I put it on I couldn’t argue against the amazing fabric and fit. I went to the event still feeling special and loved wearing a designer dress. (Want to see me in the dress? I posted a pic on Facebook.)

Summary

Pros: RTR representatives do everything they can to make your experience special. From ordering a dress just nights before the event, to sending night-out essentials (gum and lotion) with your order, it’s easy and thoughtful. I have a friend who swears by RTR for new, trendy dresses. She also loves getting to just throw her dress in the pre-paid UPS bag the next morning without worrying about dry cleaning (they do it for you). Another friend works in the fashion industry and chooses RTR so she can  wear designer dresses that she doesn’t actually have to spend hundreds on.

Cons: Despite great reviews and photos of real women wearing the dresses, you’re still gambling on if the dress will fit you well, and if the quality will be like new. (I’ve read a few reviews about worn sequins, etc. But, you can overnight another dress if you’re not happy with the first one you order.) You’re also gambling against weather or other emergencies out of RTR’s hands that might hold up your delivery.

Verdict: I would definitely do RTR again thanks to their large dress selection and great customer service. Even though I was able to wear the dress they sent, they still offered me a credit to get another of my choosing in the future. I can’t wait to browse their special pieces again soon!

I love RTR! Sometimes it is more expensive than just BUYING a dress, but it’s nice for special occasions a couple times a year. And I always seem to find ways to make it more affordable (PRO membership and getting a free birthday dress, referrals, and gift cards). One time one of the dresses I ordered in a second size came back too damaged to send to me, so they sent me an additional dress of my choice free!

As I said, there are variables beyond our control when ordering – but RTR does everything to make it up to us 🙂 Glad you liked it.
