Work Necessities

I work full-time as a communications professional in Chicago, so as much as I’d love to tend to my blog during the day, in reality most of my time is spent thinking about clients and work projects. I thought I could marry my day job and my blog this week by devoting posts to the ins and outs of being a young professional. I’ll share one of my favorite, edgy work-appropriate outfits, tips from successful friends about dressing and behaving in the workforce and other links if you’re interested in improving your resume and beyond.

I’ve kicked off the work week with some of my favorite belongings that help me look the part of a young professional as well as do better at my job. If you’re starting a new job, shopping for a new graduate or just looking to simplify your work life, check out my essentials below.

Work necessities for a young professional

1. Tory Burch Tote – I’ve found a simple, black tote to be one of my favorite and most used work pieces. Be sure to purchase a well-made one that can withstand the weight of a laptop and anything else you stuff in there. The investment will be worth it.

2. External Charger – If you’re on the road, running an event or just have a long evening planned with coworkers, an external charger will make sure you’re reachable (and Instagram ready). You simply plug in the charger beforehand, and then when you’re on the go you can plug in your phone to the charger to refresh your battery life.

3. Work Sheath – I searched long and hard for a simple black dress that’s chic enough for client meetings but also comfortable going to and from work. I love this flattering fit and the ways in which I can turn a black sheath into a new dress every time depending on the accessories, shoes and jackets I choose.

4. Trenchcoat – Last fall and spring I found myself reaching for my leather sleeved trench nearly everyday. The leather makes the jacket look luxe yet work appropriate, and the shape is flattering on every figure.

5. Makeup Remover Pads – I love these makeup remover pads to travel with or just to keep at your desk to fix any havoc wreaked by an accidental eye rub.

6. Moleskine Notebook – There are so many ways to take notes these days, but you’ll be surprised how many times you still find yourself jotting something down on a piece of paper. Keep the information neat and in one place with a sleek notebook.
