The Bigger the Hoop

hoop earrings

Okay, so I want to talk about something real that I grapple with when I’m putting together outfits. Is it true that the bigger the hoop the bigger the….well, I’ll let you finish that. (A friend recently finished that statement with “THOT.” LOL) I personally love hoop earrings and have worn them ever since high school when I finally had money to start shopping for my own jewelry. I never thought that they went out of style, and have about eight pairs on my earring tree. But I guess they must have been a fashion faux pas at some point, because now they’re back? I see all kinds of 90s style hoop earrings again. The pair I’m wearing here is Kendra Scott, via Rocksbox. I love how dainty they are and that they have little gems along the earring. I’ve been wearing them nonstop since they arrived in the mail.

In addition to the hoop earrings I’m wearing, I just have to sing praises for this floral jacket. Earlier this winter I tried on a Zara floral bomber jacket that was for sale at an incredible low price. Sadly, it was a size too large. I couldn’t find another size anywhere – not in stores or online. (By the way, have you ever tried calling a Zara store to check if an item is in stock? I did, and they are not helpful if you don’t have the item number. Just an FYI before you try calling.) That bomber jacket that got away has been in the back of my mind for a while. I was excited to see something similar on the Rent the Runway site when I was choosing items for my next Unlimited shipment. I wore it two days in a row I liked it so much! I’ve sent it back already to exchange it for something new, so you can go online now and get it for yourself. J

I’m glad we tackled the tough fashion question here, the meaning of hoop earrings. Leave a comment and let me know what you think!

My Top Trend in 2016

bow choker trend

I have to say, of all of the trends that made a comeback in 2016, the choker trend may have been my favorite. Sure, Steve may say some of them look like they’re suffocating me, but in my opinion as a lady chokers are a really sexy, flattering piece of jewelry if you choose the right one for your body type. And there are so many styles you can typically find a choker for any outfit! There are bow chokers like I’m wearing, wrap chokers to  work with any neckline and lace up chokers. Honestly, the only chokers I can’t get on board with are the tattoo chokers from my childhood (although to be honest if I’d saved any I probably would still try to pull it off at a music festival or something.)

What other trends did I like this year? Definitely the patterns – such as plaid and stripes, which is kind of reflected in this dress. The trend I wish I could have rocked but found it much harder than it needed to be? Off the shoulder shirts. Honestly. Did any of you try to wear off the shoulder shirts and end up tugging on them the whole day so that they’d stay in place? I just ordered an off the shoulder sweater – let’s hope the chunky knit material stays in place better than the elastic tops on my summer shirts.

What about you? Did you rock the choker trend or something else new in 2016? Do you want to see them stick around?

Cyber Monday Deals

Cyber Monday deals

Happy Cyber Monday, everyone! I’m trying to avoid anymore online shopping today because I personally that on Black Friday during the car ride to Dayton. Online shopping is dangerous, isn’t it? Even my fiancé got into it and we placed an order through Abercrombie & Fitch’s 50% off deal (which continues today). A&F recently rebranded and I was really excited to see some of their closet staples, like knit sweaters, as well as trendy parkas and metallic midis. I’m very interested to see how everything will fit. In case you are still looking for Cyber Monday deals to update your winter wardrobe, I thought I’d share my favorite recent purchases from Banana Republic that are also on sale today.

Banana Republic – scalloped skirt, lace top (check in stores) | similar navy pumps | jewelry c/o Rocksbox (sign up for a free subscription today using code “SincerelyJennieXOXO” | hair and makeup by Goldplaited

Scallop Skirt

How adorable are the scallops on this skirt? I loved them so much, in fact, that I bought the same scalloped skirt in red. I like that the colors navy and red are good for the holiday season and beyond. The top I’m wearing is sold out online, but here’s another navy and lace top that would go well with the skirt. There are plenty of other festive options on Banana Republic – and the entire site has the Cyber Monday deal of 50% off. Here are some other pieces I purchased during their Black Friday deal:

Rocksbox Cyber Monday Deals

By the way, Rocksbox also offers Cyber Monday deals. You can sign up for a free first month anytime using the code “SincerelyJennieXOXO,” but if you do it today only you can get $15 of forever spend. Purchase a gift after you sign up and you get $15 toward purchasing jewelry from the site in the future. If you haven’t already tried a month of Rocksbox, I’d highly suggest it! Most of the jewelry I’m wearing in this post is from the service; I always love what they send me. It’s definitely a good way to treat yourself this holiday season!

After all of this talk of shopping, it’s time for me to turn the attention from myself toward my friends and family. I’ll be back later this week with some unique gift ideas for people in your life! Happy shopping.

It’s Boots Season

cognac boots

I’d forgotten how much I liked boots until it came time to wear them again. Looking through my closet though, I’ve noticed I should probably get rid of a few trusty favorites and add some new styles to my shopping list. Luckily, I had this pair of cognac boots that are still in decent condition and definitely fit in with the 70s vibe of this outfit, which I’ve worn on repeat. (P.S. Thanks to Thomas for pointing out that this is such a Marcia Brady look!)

Sadly I’ll likely be retiring this look for this season and need to start thinking about layering heavier clothes. The colder days are coming, but at least my boots can stick around.

Druzy ring

BTW, just how awesome is this rose gold Kendra Scott druzy ring? I received it in my Rocksbox this month and kept it for several weeks. Rose gold is quickly creeping up my favorite of-the-moment metal. On Repeat

sincerely-jennie-jean-jacket

I have developed an outfit MO and I can’t seem to break out of it. But I’m not trying to, either! I’ve consistently been reaching for flowy skirts and a jean jacket because the outfit is a no-brainer when I get up in the morning but also looks pulled together. It was perfect for hot summer days because unlike maxi skirts, midis and shorter help your legs breathe and flow in the wind. I know it’ll be great going into the fall with booties and heavier layers under my jean jacket. I apologize in advance for the multiple times you’ll see this variation over the next few weeks, but I promise the skirts are going to be super cute and the jean jacket is here to stay!

Oh, and how adorable is this fishtail halo braid? It’s actually one braid sitting on top of my head, with half of my hair twisted around it. I had it done during Goldplaited’s free braid Friday and then Saturday attempted to tame the frizz to make it last one more day. If you want unlimited braids (and blowouts) call Goldplaited to find out more about their Prep Pass, and mention “Sincerely Jennie” for $10 off the first month.

BTW I’m still using Rocksbox and loving it. It always seems to send me jewelry I wasn’t aware I needed in my collection, like this metal fringe necklace. You can sign up for one month free of the jewelry subscription service using Rocksbox code “SincerelyJennieXOXO.”

Got the Blues

Sincerely Jennie Floral Skirt

Is there anything better than a pencil skirt and pair of pumps that make you feel confident and sexy? No, there is not. At least, not in your closet. The funny thing about these shoes is that I picked them out quickly the day I’d forgotten shoes for Sarah’s fake “champagne campaign,” also known as that time I got engaged. I didn’t really need a new pair of shoes other than to take pictures in that day. They were cute when I bought them, but now I’m pretty attached because every time I wear them I remember what happened the first day I slipped them on. They’re like Carrie’s Manolos, only without the embellishment or the price tag.

Let’s talk about this floral skirt. Florals seem to be a sticking point for me this spring (see last week’s post) but I’m not complaining. Blue was my favorite color before pink was (I have Mean Girls to thank for that), and every time I wear it I’m again reminded why. It’s such a flattering color for people with blue eyes and instantly makes me feel happy when wearing it. Do you have a color that does that for you?

Wedding Wear

Sincerely Jennie Wedding Wear

I can’t believe wedding season is upon us once again! I’m at the age where my friend groups are into the second wave of weddings, and that includes my college girlfriends. I traveled to my first wedding activity of the year last weekend, an Arabic celebration for a former roommate, and as I looked in my closet to determine what to pack, I realized I needed to update my wedding wear! The last time I seemed to have this many weddings was three to four years ago, so needless to say styles have changed. I’m also now looking for dresses that are a little different than my 25 year old self would wear.

TJMaxx dress (similar)| Shoes – Jessica Simpson via DSW | Earrings – via Rocksbox (get a free first month using code “sincerelyjenniexoxo“) | Lips – “Pin Up” Alter Ego by Lorac

Sincerely Jennie Wedding Wear

Thankfully I work down the street from TJMaxx and I ran in there after work the night before my wedding roadtrip. I meant to just stop in, but I wasn’t expecting the many choices the store would have! Maybe they’d just gotten a new shipment, because I had so much wedding wear to choose from including dresses by Cynthia Rowley, Ralph Lauren, Ivanka Trump and Calvin Klein – most dresses less than $40!

Sincerely Jennie Wedding Wear

I walked out of the store with several new dresses, and fell in love with this one for my first wedding of the season. The rest will have their turn though, carrying me through a summer full of not just weddings, but bridal showers and graduations, too! Is your summer looking as busy as mine?

Sincerely Jennie Wedding Wear

As for jewelry, I have a secret so I don’t have to repeat any accessories. I’ve been using Rocksbox for the past six weeks and absolutely have loved all of the jewelry they’ve lent me. This pair of Kendra Scott earrings are in heavy rotation until I send them back for the next pair. To try out Rocksbox for yourself, use code “sincerelyjenniexoxo” for a free first month. We’ve got to get creative with all of our wedding wear, right?

Soft Plum Fall Lipstick

Sincerely-Jennie-Clarins-Fall-Lipstick

Just like the leaves, my lipstick color also changes with the season. I love a plum hue for a fall lipstick! I recently found that Clarins makes an amazing moisturizing lipstick that lasts through a day of pumpkin carving, candy snacking and even a few kisses with the bf.

Seriously, the Joli Rouge lipstick goes on like a gloss and, although it fades a bit throughout the day, it leaves an even hint of color for hours so your lips aren’t ever bare. I’ll definitely have this soft plum shade in heavy rotation throughout the season.

And how about the ease of this black dress with a jean jacket? You first saw it in a past blog post when I dressed it up with heels. I’ve found the mock turtleneck dress goes with low booties just as well as black stilettos. Layer it with gold Rocksbox (use code “jenniebff5” for one month free) and you’re good to go out the door!

Oh, and I have to give a shout out to my hair stylist Hannah London at Robert Jeffrey in Lincoln Park. You know how excited you get when you find that one hair stylist? Well, Hannah is it for me. I found her a few years ago when I went in to use a Groupon, and haven’t strayed since. I was disappointed when she told me she was moving to L.A., but she’s coming back every few months so I can stay a bright blonde! Call in to Robert Jeffrey to see if you can set up an appointment with Hannah or any of their other talented hair stylists, and don’t forget to drop my name!

Dog Days

Sincerely-Jennie-Cold-Shoulder-Dress

This last weekend Chicago saw weather that was sunny and 75. It was welcomed after a week of fluctuating temps and dreary skies. It also gave me a chance to play around with coordinating a favorite summer piece with my new favorite fall pieces, these boots. My second favorite part of the outfit? A BaubleBar hair chain, a new accessory that mixes surprise and royalty. Definitely a new closet must-have.

Rental Reviews

Clothing-Rental-Reviews-SJYou might have noticed that my closet has expanded quite a bit thanks to a rotating supply of clothing and jewelry rentals. Through Le Tote, Rent the Runway Unlimited and Rocksbox, I’ve had the chance to try new designers and have some fun with my fashion, and I wanted to share my reviews.

By joining these clothing and accessory rental programs (not all at the same time), believe it or not, I’ve actually saved money that I’d typically spend monthly on clothes. How? Because by paying one set price per month, I’ve received numerous new things and felt less of a need to go out and buy more myself.  And if I do really love an item I rent, some of these services give me the option of purchasing it at a fraction of the retail cost.

If you’ve been considering joining a jewelry or clothing rental service, continue reading my rental review after the jump. I’m providing a review of each one listed above and sharing some more of the items I managed to get as well as links to sign up. If you’re interested in hearing more about a certain service, let me know, and I’ll plan another post!
