Make Networking Work for You

As young professionals, we can hear the term “networking” and immediately feel overwhelmed. Do we network with more senior coworkers at their professional groups? Do we join a junior board? Recently I’ve found a group that I find thoughtful and fun, United Women in Business (UWIB) Chicago, and have learned a lot from their programming. I invited VP of Community Relations Marissa Ellenby to share more about the organization, which has chapters in several cities, as well as give her tips for women looking for a professional group that fits their interests and needs.

With awesome programming, social events and community service initiatives, UWIB Chi’s goal is to help members excel despite the challenges and inequalities that women face in today’s business environment.

When my friends first introduced me to the group, I will admit I was a bit skeptical. But almost two years later, now as the VP of Community Relations, I realize going to that first meeting was one of the best professional and personal decisions I’ve ever made. As a semi-introverted 20-something, networking at times seems like a chore. It has been ingrained in my mind that networking is one of the most important things I can do to advance my career, but standard events feel forced.

That’s what I love about UWIB events: We bring together a diverse group of young women from all career industries and backgrounds in Chicago to do great work for ourselves and our community. Just in the first half of 2015 we’ve hosted a brunch and happy hour, helped Upwardly Global with resume building, held a shopping event at Madewell and held a riveting panel discussion on the value of an MBA.

I’d suggest that any young professional who is trying to conquer their networking fears begin by thinking about what their goals are: Do you want to change jobs? Are you looking for a way to give back to your community? Are you simply looking for like-minded people to chat with? From there, you can decide where to spend your time and efforts. Whatever your passion, GET INVOLVED – I know I am so glad that I did! You never know who you might meet and what future opportunities (and new distressed denim) might come along.
