The Blue Valentine

I love Valentine’s Day, and I think it’s because (aside from the fact that I LOVE chocolate) one of my favorite childhood books is about the holiday. My mom read me “The Blue Valentine” when I was a child, a book that was actually written when she was young. The Blue Valentine is a story about Cindy, the new girl at school, who wants to impress her teacher and makes her an nontraditional Valentine. It’s blue, her teacher’s favorite color.

Cindy is so excited to put the card in her teacher’s Valentine box, even after it gets a little damp from the rain, that she rushes to school. Later that day her teacher hangs up all of the Valentine cards and Cindy’s is nowhere to be found. She immediately believes it’s because it was silly – who would want a blue Valentine?

Luckily, the Valentine gets found stuck to the bottom of the cardboard box, and Cindy’s teacher loves it. She even asks Cindy to teach the rest of the class how to make it, and suddenly Cindy isn’t just the new girl who nobody knows. She’s someone creative and interesting.

I remember The Blue Valentine as a special book not just because I admire kids like Cindy – original and thoughtful – but also because reading books together was an activity my mom did with all of her kids for many years. So I’m always sure to wear something blue around Valentine’s Day because the color holds a special memory for me.

XOXO.
