And the Bride Wore White

Today continues Bachelorette Week on Sincerely, Jennie. Read yesterday’s post for the story on my unexpected Charleston trip.

I never thought I’d be that girl searching for every white dress or “bride” T-shirt once I got engaged. But as my bridal calendar started to fill up, I found myself also filling up online shopping carts with those things. Truly, I don’t have a lot of opportunities in life to wear a white dress (the last time I think I had one was for college graduation), so I was excited to wear white to signify that I was a bride-to-be. I used Rent the Runway Unlimited so that I could have access to many white dresses and bridal accessories. Paying a flat fee per month I thought I’d have a rotating closet, and not several white dresses hanging in my closet that I wouldn’t wear again. (For those who don’t use Rent the Runway, scroll to the bottom to see my round up of white dresses for bachelorette party events.)

Throughout my engagement I found myself using the Unlimited program differently than I’d planned. For two of my bridal showers I ended up choosing pink dresses. I chose those simply because pink is my signature color and the style of the dresses suited me better. I only found one white dress on the site that ended up being a great white dress for bachelorette party activities in Charleston. In the end, Unlimited came in handy because of their clutches fit for a bride, like this Kate Spade clutch that I would only ever carry during an engagement, and jewelry options for my wedding. Can’t wait to share wedding photos so you see what I rented for the big day!

In the end, I did purchase a white dress for my reception party dress because I wanted the option to alter it if needed. (Luckily, there was no need and it was a really affordable price for the party!) Friends got me fun T-shirts or accessories for a bride, and I purchased a few when I saw them on sale. I decided that I would be engaged for one fun year of my life, and I wanted to enjoy it by wearing any silly graphic T-shirts I wanted! Renting was an option I was happy to have at my fingertips, but I also liked purchasing some items for keeps.

Palm Print Dress

I wasn’t planning to share honeymoon photos so soon, but I just had to let you know about this Asos palm print dress before it sells out! Recently, everything I’ve purchased on the site seems to be sold out within days of me pulling the trigger. But as I write this post, this cute midi pencil dress is still available in sizes 0-14 and sizes 12-24.

Palm Print Dress

I actually searched out this dress and many other palm print dresses (more links below) after seeing Monica wear something similar on her blog. I knew palm print would be perfect for my honeymoon in Grenada, as well as for a cousin’s “fiesta” wedding later this summer. I hopped on Asos and typed in “palm print.” I was so excited about all of the options I found!  I ordered several dresses to try, since Asos has free shipping and returns. This little number was super comfortable (the fabric is stretchy and light for summer), feels so sexy with the off-the-shoulder straps, and is a reasonable price.

Palm Print Dress

The clutch I paired with the palm print dress is another piece borrowed from Rent the Runway. I originally restarted the service’s Unlimited program for my wedding, but I love having access to designer pieces so much that I’m continuing it (at least for a bit). It helped me get the perfect accessories for my wedding and, as you can see, for my honeymoon! Now that I’m back to normal life, I’m trying out Rent the Runway work wear options. Will report back later.

“Spring” Outfit

Navy Blazer

Do you want the truth about this outfit? The truth is that while it looks like the perfect spring apparel, it’s actually too cold in Chicago to wear this right now. Some people are still wearing winter jackets, so a navy blazer will not do. No, I wore this outfit in the fall but thought it was worth sharing again. Because maybe all of you who are in a bit warmer weather can go ahead and wear it for me. I wish I could wear it right now because I love its simplicity. It’s casual, yet the navy blazer and heels polish off the striped T and torn denim. These items aren’t in stores anymore, but I did find look-a-likes:

By the way, I’m continuing to slow down on posting here. I have tons I want to share about my wedding (which is now less than 2 weeks away!) but will be saving most of it until after Steve’s and my nuptials. Steve has always been very supportive of this blog as my hobby – he even plays my blogger bf – but he suggested I take time off during this last crunch, and I think he’s right. There are so many last minute details for a wedding, and more and more keep popping up each day! Like, oops, we forgot to think about décor for the cocktail hour tables! All of this while continuing to be at work fulltime. So yes, Steve was right that for my sanity I should slow down on blogging. I hope you’ll all still follow along on Instagram, where I’ll continue to share OOTD and behind-the-scenes peeks at my wedding preparation. Thanks for your interest!

Spring Wedding Options

what to wear to a spring wedding

This year’s wedding season has a different meaning for Steve & me. Sure, we’re looking forward to our wedding, but we also have a few others before and after! We’re super excited to celebrate with our friends around such a big time for us, too. Planning for their weddings is giving me a great excuse to think about something other than our big day. It’s also an excuse to pick out my outfits, something I have so much fun doing!

You might be surprised to hear this, but while I own lots of dresses, I can wear very few to a spring wedding. (That’s one of the reasons I signed up for a Rent the Runway Unlimited subscription again.) I’ve gone through my closet to evaluate what could work for a formal event or cocktail hour.  Obviously this floral dress was on the top of my list, as were fun dancing shoes. While both of these items are no longer in stores, I rounded up similar products I found in case you’re also in need of ideas about what to wear to a spring wedding.

What to wear to a spring wedding?

I know, I know: floral for spring, groundbreaking. But there’s a reason this trend pops up year after year. Just how adorable are these floral dresses?

Wedding Guest Shoes

And of course we can’t forget a fun pair of shoes. I love a pair of fringe shoes I purchased last year from Banana Republic. The store has similar pairs this year, and there are plenty of options in all colors:

Whatever you wear, just be sure you can dance in it. You wouldn’t want an uncomfortable pair of shoes or tight dress to ruin your time as a guest at a wedding this spring!

“Spring” Style in Chicago

Spring Trench CoatWhat do you do when it’s April and there’s snow in the forecast? A lot of things to trick yourself that’s not the case, and to remind yourself what you have to look forward to. For me, I bring spring inside. I pick up fresh flowers for the house. I also try to remind myself of some of my favorite spring clothes in my closet. I wear open toe shoes, but layer up top with a spring trench coat. I pull out spring skirts to pair with tights or wear bare-legged with a sweater. These are just a few ways I try to make spring come early (okay, not even early!) when Mother Nature won’t.

Spring Trench Coat

I’m not going to harp on the weather too much. For one, this doesn’t surprise anyone who’s from the Midwest. I remember springs when I was a child and we had our Easter egg hunts in snow! Second, I’ll be escaping it soon. This summer I’m traveling to Charleston for my bachelorette party! It’ll be my first time in the city and I can’t wait to explore. I’ll post more later this week about what we plan to do and pack.

By the way, this suede layering piece, which I’ve now determined is my spring trench coat, has been a staple in my closet since last fall. Want to see how else I styled this vest? Check out my posts:

How’s the weather where you are? Are you still waiting for spring? Or are you enjoying fresh blooms outdoors already? I hope it’s the latter! I’m really jealous of all the ladies I see on Instagram rocking their spring dresses sans coat. We’ll get there soon, Chicago.

The Bigger the Hoop

hoop earrings

Okay, so I want to talk about something real that I grapple with when I’m putting together outfits. Is it true that the bigger the hoop the bigger the….well, I’ll let you finish that. (A friend recently finished that statement with “THOT.” LOL) I personally love hoop earrings and have worn them ever since high school when I finally had money to start shopping for my own jewelry. I never thought that they went out of style, and have about eight pairs on my earring tree. But I guess they must have been a fashion faux pas at some point, because now they’re back? I see all kinds of 90s style hoop earrings again. The pair I’m wearing here is Kendra Scott, via Rocksbox. I love how dainty they are and that they have little gems along the earring. I’ve been wearing them nonstop since they arrived in the mail.

In addition to the hoop earrings I’m wearing, I just have to sing praises for this floral jacket. Earlier this winter I tried on a Zara floral bomber jacket that was for sale at an incredible low price. Sadly, it was a size too large. I couldn’t find another size anywhere – not in stores or online. (By the way, have you ever tried calling a Zara store to check if an item is in stock? I did, and they are not helpful if you don’t have the item number. Just an FYI before you try calling.) That bomber jacket that got away has been in the back of my mind for a while. I was excited to see something similar on the Rent the Runway site when I was choosing items for my next Unlimited shipment. I wore it two days in a row I liked it so much! I’ve sent it back already to exchange it for something new, so you can go online now and get it for yourself. J

I’m glad we tackled the tough fashion question here, the meaning of hoop earrings. Leave a comment and let me know what you think!

Back at It: Rent the Runway Unlimited

Rent the Runway Unlimited Reviews

Guys, I am so excited to share that I started using Rent the Runway Unlimited again! You may remember I cancelled last winter after several months of use. (You can read my Rent the Runway Unlimited reviews here and here.) I loved renting three designer pieces at a time, for an unlimited time, but I couldn’t justify the cost anymore. However, with my wedding coming up I found myself ready to make a lot of clothing purchases for bridal events. I realized that instead of buying a lot of white dresses I’d wear very infrequently after the wedding, it made more sense to just pay for the service for a few months. I got my first order via UPS last week and boy was I happy with it! The Rebecca Minkoff purse above was just one of three pieces. See more photos of what I rented after the jump, plus a link for $30 off.

Invested

winter vest

Well it’s back to tights for those of us in the Midwest, but I can’t really complain. Seventy degree weather in February is amazing until you realize why it’s 70 degrees. (Climate change, ya know?) Anyway, I still have some dress/skirt+tight combos I’m looking forward to wearing and sharing. I try my best to stretch out my fall/winter wardrobe into spring, a la here, to avoid feeling the need to purchase new spring clothes. (That didn’t stop me for shopping for my Charleston bachelorette, though. I thought this floral maxi was perfect!) What about you? What’s your cutoff for tights and other winter wear?

winter vest

By the way, the vest in this post is one that I hesitated to buy at first. Now, I can’t believe I ever had reservations! It’s the third time I’ve shared an outfit with it on the blog, and I’ve worn it countless other times IRL. Although this Express vest is no longer available, I’ve rounded up some similar vests below. I think it’d be worth investing in a lightweight option for spring. Khaki vests just add something to an outfit!

Sunny and Sixty

Chicago palm leaf mural

So this little twirl above sums up how I felt about the weekend. Chicagoans are going wild for the 60 degree weather. Even better, it’s supposed to continue through the beginning part of this week. Although Steve and I were inside for a large part of the day Saturday, we still got to enjoy the sun. We walked outside during our lunch break at Pre-Cana (Catholic marriage preparation) and went on an evening jog. On Sunday, we planned brunch and shopping on Milwaukee Ave so we could stroll outside for a better part of the day. Really, it was just such an amazing reminder about what’s to come in a few months!

Since the weather has been warmer, I’ve been mixing clothing from different seasons. I purchased so many skirts last summer that I’m trying to find ways to decrease the cost per wear by pairing them with lightweight sweaters. You might remember this printed Banana Republic skirt from a previous post. I absolutely loved how a jean jacket could dress it down in summer, and now a gray sweater makes it a little more appropriate for this time of year when the temps haven’t risen past 70 degrees yet. (Even if the Chicago palm leaf mural leads you to believe otherwise.)

Oh, and if you’re wondering what Pre-Cana is, which I mentioned above, it’s a requirement for any couples getting married in the Catholic church. Steve and I chose a course in a Chicago suburb because the day-long class fit with our schedule. We had no idea that on Feb. 18 the class would also conflict with one of the nicest days of the winter! Luckily the teacher sensed we were all itching to be outside and let us out a little early. It felt really nice to have spent that important time with Steve, and then even better to end the day with a jog together. It’s something I rarely do with Steve, but who could pass up spending more quality time with the fiancé on a sunny day?

My Heart on My Leggings

LuLaRoe leggings

Happy Valentine’s Day! This is really one of my favorite days each year, and not just because I get to wear a plethora of pink. I love all of the love in the air, whether it’s between a romantic couple, friends, coworkers or even just for yourself. It was fun today as I talked to coworkers about their plans for Valentine’s Day, it reminded me of my Vday evening five years ago. One coworker said she was treating herself to a gourmet meal and wine. Five years ago I also treated myself to dinner – albeit Kentucky Fried Chicken – and a movie on TV, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. I had just started texting with someone I’d met on OKCupid (the website, this was before apps). He asked me what I was doing that night and I shot back a photo of my KFC. It actually really appealed to him; he took it to mean I could enjoy greasy fast food once in a while.

The texting was intriguing at the time, but little did I know it would start a long standing joke between Steve and me, that we should get KFC on Valentine’s Day. Yep, that guy was Steve. On that solo VDay I had no clue that a guy I hadn’t even met in person yet was going to become my fiancé.

LuLaRoe leggings

I’ll try not to write too sappy of a post because I probably border on that often in my Wedding Wednesday musings. I just want to say thank you to Steve for everything he brings to our relationship: his love of travel, upbeat personality even when I have a frown, and nurturing of friendships, to name a few. He helps ease my naturally stressed out self, especially during our wedding planning. That’s not to say he’s perfect or we’re perfect, but we can take the unexpected and frustrating and face it head on to turn it instead into something happier. And that’s the thing I like most about our relationship.

LuLaRoe leggings

I also want to say thanks to Steve for his support of my blogging and photo taking. He selflessly snapped photos of me in my Valentine’s Day themed LuLaRoe leggings while we were on vacation this past week. (But the photos waited until after he was treated to a New Glarus beer, of course.) I gotta tell you, what they say about these LuLaRoe leggings are true. They feel like butter. I’m super happy to have them in such an adorable print, too. (Yes, I wore my LuLaRoe leggings to work today.) So back on track, thank you Steve, and happy Valentine’s Day! Can’t wait to eat our KFC tonight!
