Tried and True Gifts for Guys

men's gift guide

I’m not big on men’s gift guides. I read a lot of them that are tech or hardware geared and think, “How sexist; men in my life don’t care about most of this stuff.” Buzzfeed recently published their own list of great gifts for men with the same sentiment. I read it and realized just because a gift guide says it’s for “men” doesn’t mean it has to follow the typical pattern. Today I’m rounding up my own suggestions of gifts the men in your life might like. They’re not all the stuff you’d see in GQ or Sears, but instead they’re actual items guys I know have been into. Some even overlap with the Buzzfeed list because Steve has tried them himself and can attest for their appeal!

Red, White and Blue Work Attire

Fourth of July Outfit

I’ve been loving reading everyone’s Fourth of July posts around the Interwebs. Sarah shared party inspiration (she threw a great fête last year), Emily posted several patriotic outfits, and Delish is just making my mouth water. In reading these, I am also getting super excited for the long weekend! With four days off, I feel like I have unlimited options for patriotic fun. What I don’t have are unlimited options for a good Fourth of July outfit. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but red isn’t really in my typical rotation. I did just buy an adorable block heel sandal to fix that, but they shoe is already sold out! Lucky for you this weekend is also a big one for sales in case you’re looking to spruce up your summer wardrobe. The block heel sandal I shared is from Banana Republic. While it’s sold out, there are plenty of similar shoes on the site that are an extra 50% off of sale!

So back to ideas for a Fourth of July outfit, I thought now would be the perfect time to share work wear inspiration – that just happens to be red, white and blue. I found this Calvin Klein shift dress at TJMaxx, and bought it in two colors it was perfect. I love going into that store so much because it carries a lot of brands that I know fit me well, and often can get the same dress in multiple colors. The shoes in this outfit have quickly become this summer’s favorite. They are compliment-magnets and also super comfortable. Who would have thought? (Again, they’re from Banana Republic but sold out. Shop a very similar pair here.)

I did find one little gem of a Fourth of July outfit if you want to go back into the Sincerely, Jennie archives. Check this out! I loved the polka dot and polka dot combo. Sadly, I have no idea where this pair of wedges are now! Perhaps I should go check my storage unit (that thing’s a black hole)? Looks like I’m adding one more thing to my weekend itinerary. Hope you have a great, long weekend – and it doesn’t even actually matter what you’re wearing as long as you’re having fun!

Secret Santa with Uncommon Goods

secret santa

It’s that time of the year again, the most wonderful time of the year. It’s the annual gift exchange with my college girlfriends! Our Secret Santa began in the dorms our freshman year of college and has since evolved to a long-distance gift exchange. Sure, we miss the fun of sneaking over to each other’s rooms and dropping off little little clues, but it’s just as nice to get a package in the mail from an old friend. Since this is a long-distance Secret Santa, we use an online website to choose each other’s names and upload a wishlist. Last year, the friend I had in the exchange asked for a unique map off of Uncommon Goods. With so many gifts to buy this year – including something for my pick in the Secret Santa gift exchange (ssshhh it’s a secret!) – I thought I’d check the site out again for handmade, recycle and organic Christmas gift ideas.

Uncommon Goods Christmas Gifts for Women

Secret Santa Christmas Gifts

Several gifts jumped out at me, and made me think of of my friends in the exchange. What I really like about the Christmas gifts on Uncommon Goods is they tell the story of who is selling them/made them, and how they’re doing it sustainably. It makes me feel all the more happy about my choices for my college girlfriends:

  1. Constitution Glass – This is kind of a joke, but two friends interned in D.C. one summer during college and when they came back they would not stop talking about how amazing the city was. They were also oddly in love with our Founding Fathers. Well, wouldn’t you know it, they both now live in D.C. and still love America.
  2. Macaron Kit – There are several world travelers in our group and several bakers. I figured either would love having the luxury of making macarons in their own kitchen.
  3. Chocolate Soaps – Ok, truthfully, these soaps really caught my eye as a gift for myself. I’m one of the biggest chocolaholics in our friend group, so much so that I wouldn’t mind bathing in it.
  4. Cheeseboard with Chalk – One of our friends very recently got married and she loves to host. (We both also very much enjoy cheese.) This slate cheese board is so unique and elegant, she should definitely consider adding it to her wishlist!
  5. Flavor Fusion Water Bottle – This water bottle could really be for any of us, as we’re all often sharing work out tips or talking about the new fitness classes we’ve tried. Why not stay hydrated with water infused with a fruit flavor?
  6. 45-second Omelet Maker – One of my girlfriends and I enjoy making breakfast together when we visit each other. Her specialty is omelets. I saw this 45-second omelet maker and immediately thought about how great it would be to have a healthy but quick breakfast option every day!
  7. Wine Pearls – Let’s be honest, we’ve come a long way since college, but that doesn’t mean we don’t still enjoy a nice chilled glass of wine. Thankfully these wine pearls keep it classy.

So those are my picks for the ladies in my life, but there are many more Christmas gifts on Uncommon Goods I didn’t even share. Take a second to browse the site by price or by interest to see what pops out at you. I bet you’ll find something even for that person who has everything!

Fourth of July

July 4 party ideas

This weekend Steve and I will be traveling through Florida to see family and attend a friend’s wedding. I am so excited to be getting away for a trip, but was a little disappointed not to be home for the Fourth of July. There’s just something about the long weekend and an excuse to barbecue that holds a special place in my heart. Luckily, Sarah held an early July 4 party so I didn’t have to miss out on the festivities! And boy, did she have so many great July 4 party ideas – I just had to share them with you! Like above, she froze water balloons for an extra decorative way to keep our drinks cold. Keep reading for more cute July 4 party ideas.

Make your own photo booth
All you need is an American flag, fun July 4 decorations and cell phones for creative Boomerangs and photos. Bonus points if the props light up!

July 4 party ideas

One drink, multiple flavors
For one of the party’s drinks, Sarah mixed up several flavors of margarita {and shhh…I tried them all}. I loved having multiple choices that still fit in one spot thanks to this convenient drink tower from Z Gallerie. It left lots of room on the table for other food and beverages.

Flavored ice cubes
Ice cubes with jalapeno pieces or limes were the perfect addition to the margaritas. For your party, you could choose to freeze many fruits or flavors for an added touch to the drink table!

So how are you celebrating this year? Any July 4 party ideas to share?

All the Sparkle

Sincerely Jennie Holiday Outfit Idea 7I can’t believe we’re just a few days from Christmas! I feel like I ran myself ragged trying to hit every holiday party, get every gift and finish up every last bit of work, but I can now say I’m on vacation. I’m looking forward to spending the holidays with my family in warm and sunny Florida. Before I left I had to share one last holiday outfit idea for those who won’t be in 70 degree weather. (Sorry, not to rub it in…) Thank you to Hannah Drews Photography for these photos and for creating a festive little space to help get me in the holiday spirit. Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

Making a List, Checking It Twice

homemade gift bags

By now I hope your holiday shopping is complete and the next thing on your list is wrapping the presents. I’m finally to this stage and am really excited to sit down and lay all my gifts out next to my wrapping supplies. I love buying presents and also love personalizing their presentation. That doesn’t mean buying a ton of supplies. As I learned last year from an event with Debi Lilly, creative gift bags can be made from a lot of arts and crafts and household items. Use these bags as inspiration and take a look at the tips I compiled below for beautiful homemade gift bags.

homemade gift bags 1

Homemade gift bag inspiration:

  1. No gift bags available? Make one out of newspaper or other paper scraps.
  2. Use office supplies like gold paperclips or paper fasteners for unexpected glamour.
  3. Find supplies in your kitchen like holiday-themed baking cups.
  4. Use washi tape for an inexpensive and easy way to create patterns and add extra glitz to bags.
  5. Gift bag tags and stickers will oomph up a plain brown bag.
  6. Purchase large ornaments to tie to the bag or box.
  7. Create a cute polka-dot pattern on your bag with paint and a round sponge.
  8. Fold a doily over the top of the bag for a snowflake-like touch.
  9. Enlist the kids to help stamp strings of holiday lights on bags.
  10. Tie winter foilage, such as holly and tree scraps, onto the bag’s handles.

The Blue Valentine

I love Valentine’s Day, and I think it’s because (aside from the fact that I LOVE chocolate) one of my favorite childhood books is about the holiday. My mom read me “The Blue Valentine” when I was a child, a book that was actually written when she was young. The Blue Valentine is a story about Cindy, the new girl at school, who wants to impress her teacher and makes her an nontraditional Valentine. It’s blue, her teacher’s favorite color.

Cindy is so excited to put the card in her teacher’s Valentine box, even after it gets a little damp from the rain, that she rushes to school. Later that day her teacher hangs up all of the Valentine cards and Cindy’s is nowhere to be found. She immediately believes it’s because it was silly – who would want a blue Valentine?

Luckily, the Valentine gets found stuck to the bottom of the cardboard box, and Cindy’s teacher loves it. She even asks Cindy to teach the rest of the class how to make it, and suddenly Cindy isn’t just the new girl who nobody knows. She’s someone creative and interesting.

I remember The Blue Valentine as a special book not just because I admire kids like Cindy – original and thoughtful – but also because reading books together was an activity my mom did with all of her kids for many years. So I’m always sure to wear something blue around Valentine’s Day because the color holds a special memory for me.

A Special Night In

Valentine's Day Ideas for Your Guy

Believe it or not, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Since it’s one of my favorite holidays, I like to get ready early. I already have my Valentine’s Day dress (it’s red, how original) but haven’t gotten my guy’s gift together. So I thought I’d share some of my ideas with you if you’re planning on spending a romantic night in. If you’re celebrating Galentine’s Day instead, check back next week for that round up.

1) If your guy is like mine, he and his friends love a good cocktail but might not always plan ahead to make that happen. So help them out. Visit Drizly’s blog to see how you can gift your guy with an alcohol delivery that allows him to choose the most convenient arrival time.

2) For the man who loves to play Don Draper Ken Cosgrove, this Pottery Barn Library Decanter is the perfect addition to his growing bar collection.

3) These Jessica Simpson shoes are the perfect mix of sultry and romance, and are bound to have your guy rushing through dinner to get back home.

4) Create an intoxicating aroma in your little apartment with a scent from ILLUME’s date night collection. The Tangerine Teakwood (on sale) sounded to me like it was perfect for a romantic night in.

5) If we’ve learned nothing else from Cher, it’s that whenever a boy comes over you should always have something baking. But don’t burn these Ghiradelli Ultimate Double Chocolate Cookies – the recipe sounds too good to waste!

Oh, and since Valentine’s Day is just the greatest, some other bloggers and I have teamed up with Swarovski for a special giveaway to celebrate. Check my Instagram tonight at 5 p.m. CST to enter.
