Pilsen, Chicago

Sincerely Jennie Places to Go in Pilsen

When I first moved in with my fiance this summer I was nervous about adjusting to my new neighborhood. For the five years I lived in Chicago I was in Lakeview, a neighborhood north of the city. Then I moved west of the city and had a lot of new sights and things to get used to. There were also a lot of new opportunities to explore. If I travel just south of my ‘hood I’m in Pilsen. Pilsen has traditionally been a port of entry for immigrants and now combines many customs of the Mexican-American community. It’s more than just good murals (although there are plenty of those), and my coworkers took me out there recently to see for myself.

The Food in Pilsen

We can start with the amazing food and drink Pilsen restaurants have to offer. My colleagues and I met up on a Saturday morning to explore the neighorhood, and one of them, a Pilsen regular, took us to La Vaca for tacos and Micheladas. We had a great time not talking about work over drinks, and more drinks.

After our lunch, we wanted to wash it down with something sweet. We walked to get paletas, Mexican ice pops and shaved ice. I had never had paletas before, but they quickly became one of my favorite desserts. You can get milk or water based fruit popsicles, and I found the teeniest, cutest one. Scroll down…

We finished the day by walking (all of that walking has got to count for something, right?) to a panaderia. I could hardly contain my excitement in choosing from all of the pastries. It was so fun to get one of each to bring home to my fiance to sample.

Pilsen Murals

Just so you know we didn’t only eat during our afternoon in Pilsen, we also enjoyed taking in the amazing street art. I loved seeing the bright colors, and am really looking forward to another afternoon there to do the mural walking tour. It’s so fun to have so many new sights in my new backyard!

A huge thank you to my coworkers Mallory, Mike and Emily for going out with me and showing me their favorite spots in the neighborhood!
