I’ve been obsessed with capes for quite some time … just not in my own closet. It’s not that I don’t want to own one, I just don’t know how to wear a cape! Can I wear one with jeans? Can I wear one with over-the-knee boots? What about wearing a cape to work? Judging from what I found on Pinterest, the answer to all of these questions is a big YES!
So the next step, now which cape to wear? Take a look below at how you can make capes your own.
Capes with a belt
I’m sure this won’t work for all capes, but belting a cape is a great idea if you’re petite or need to create a waist. A belt is also a great trick to turn a blanket scarf into a faux-cape.
Capes with a dress
This is for ladies in a warmer climate or for when weather is unseasonably warm (like when we saw this week). A cape is a great alternative to the same old same old jacket. It also would look a lot more natural to wear inside than, say, a trench coat.
Capes with jeans
Sure, you can wear capes with jeans in dozens of ways, but I loved how unexpected this look is. A sweater and jeans don’t necessarily need another layer, but wearing a cape that’s not bulky can add color to an otherwise minimalist outfit.
Capes to work
If there’s anyone who can teach you how to look professional and on-trend it’s Olivia Pope. I love how she paired a cape with leather gloves to look extra pulled together to and from the office.
So there you go, lots of ways to wear lots of capes. Now I just have to decide which one I want for myself! (Spoiler alert, I’m test-driving one next week with Rent the Runway. You should see photos soon!)

Love the idea of a blanket scarf belted as a cape. What a great way to get the most out of your wardrobe! Thanks for the tips.
