Professional With an Edge

DVF Skirt
I’m been having a lot of fun this week talking about work, and not because I get geeked to bring the office home. It’s because as young professionals I think we’re all still trying to navigate the workplace sometimes, and that can include style on the job. Each office is different and office style can even vary at every level.

I work in communications, which is traditionally a more casual setting than, say, a law office. But to me that doesn’t mean I have an excuse to slack off. As a communicator, I know as well as anyone that you may not get a second chance to make a first impression and that some people will judge a book by its cover. So for me, when  I wear a loud print or a leather jacket to work, I want the rest of the outfit to look effortful. That’s why I was so excited to stumble upon this DVF skirt at TJMaxx. It’s young and fun but can be subdued with simpler pieces. As an ensemble, it really looks like a thoughtful outfit. Even my father, an executive at a steel company, saw me in this and called my look “professional with an edge.” Just what I was going for.

Have more questions about office style? Tomorrow, some of my friends who shared work advice yesterday will be back to tell you what they’ve learned on the job, including why you don’t need that $250 pair of flats.
