Old St. Nail Polish

When you’re a guest at a friend’s holiday party are you often looking to give a hostess gift that’s more creative than wine? I know I want to present my host with something a little more personal, so in the last few years I’ve relied on a holiday DIY idea my mom passed on. It combines my love of nail polish and crafting. See below for step-by-step instructions.

In this tutorial I use and am wearing a favorite polish, OPI’s “Lincoln Park After Dark.” The color is so rich and the dark that it’s perfect for winter or an edgier summer look. In addition to the nail polish, I’ve gathered all of the colors of cardstock I need, double-sided tape, a paper cutter and black colored pencil.

I first measure out the base color, the red cardstock, to see where to cut so that it’s the height of the nail polish and will wrap around the bottle. I also measure out Santa’s belt, or the black cardstock, to be the same length as red.

I then measure out Santa’s “fur,” or the white cardstock, to be the same height as the red. I tape the white to the red and, after applying double-sided tape to the red cardstock, wrap it around the bottle, adding extra tape where the red overlaps itself.

I cut out small yellow and black squares to accessorize the belt and glue those on top of the black strip of paper. I draw St. Nick’s buttons and, voila, a thoughtful holiday DIY in less than 10 minutes!
