DIY Ceramic Mugs

The other day I was in the Dollar Tree looking for packing tape (it costs so much less there than the post office) and I stumbled upon the kitchenware isle. I saw the plain white ceramic mugs and plates and was reminded of a DIY I was a little bit obsessed with last winter. The Anthropologie-inspired mugs are a great thing to bring back for little kids with Mother’s Day right around the corner, or even for yourself to brighten up your kitchen. Read below to find out how.

Materials Needed:

  • Ceramic mug or other kitchenware (I purchased mine from the Dollar Tree)
  • Sharpies (some blogs suggest oil-based, but I used normal office ones and they worked)
  • Acrylic sealant spray, if preferred

Instructions:

  1. Wash mugs and let dry completely
  2. Draw preferred design on mug. My friends and I looked up Anthropologie, Lily Pulitzer and Vera Bradley products for inspiration. We also practiced first on scrap paper.
  3. Let mugs dry.
  4. Bake mugs at 350 degrees for ½ hour. Put in as the oven is heating up and let the mugs cool down in the oven to avoid cracking.
  5. Spray with acrylic sealant spray. (I mentioned above do this only if preferred. Not all other DIY mug projects suggested using this, although it should make the designs last longer. However, when I used it, I found it smudged some of the designs unless I sprayed the mugs from far away, and the sealant gave the mug a weird top-coat).
  6. Hand wash mugs only.
