Rental Reviews

Clothing-Rental-Reviews-SJYou might have noticed that my closet has expanded quite a bit thanks to a rotating supply of clothing and jewelry rentals. Through Le Tote, Rent the Runway Unlimited and Rocksbox, I’ve had the chance to try new designers and have some fun with my fashion, and I wanted to share my reviews.

By joining these clothing and accessory rental programs, believe it or not, I’ve actually saved money that I’d typically spend monthly on clothes. How? Because by paying one set price per month, I’ve received numerous new things and felt less of a need to go out and buy more myself.  And if I do really love an item I rent, some of these services give me the option of purchasing it at a fraction of the retail cost.

If you’ve been considering joining a jewelry or clothing rental service, continue reading my rental review after the jump. I’m providing a review of each one listed above and sharing some more of the items I managed to get as well as links to sign up. If you’re interested in hearing more about a certain service, let me know, and I’ll plan another post!

Rent the Runway Unlimited Review

See an updated Rent the Runway Unlimited review here

I first used Rent the Runway (RTR) by simply renting one dress for a charity event (read the original RTR review here), and after having a great experience I put myself on the waiting list to become an Unlimited member. Unlimited members get access to nearly every designer dress, purse and accessory on the Rent the Runway site for $159 a month.

How It Works: After you’re accepted to Unlimited, you add items to your closet. There’s a seemingly endless selection of everything – cocktail dresses, tote bags for work, sparkly jewelry and even “Cinderella” dresses for just because. You choose four available items to be shipped at once, and they arrive several days later. They’re yours for however long you choose. Once you are finished with an item, you simply place it in a prelabeled UPS package and mail it back to RTR or drop it off at a Rent the Runway store or WeWork drop off location. You can send back 1, 2 or all of the items in a prepaid UPS envelope and exchange them for the replacements – it’s essentially a rotating closet of four designer goods at a time.

The Pros: I’m really looking forward to the months when I have several vacations and weddings or planned because I’ll be able to have new-to-me high-end accessories and dresses for a fraction of what they actually cost. I am also constantly getting complimented on my RTR pieces, and it’s exciting to answer back, “Thanks, they’re Oscar de la Renta earrings!”

The Cons: Unlike regular Rent the Runway, when you rent a dress through Unlimited you don’t get a back-up-size for free. So there have been times when one of the dresses I ordered didn’t fit. You also can’t reserve dresses for certain dates, so I’m gambling with what inventory will be available each time I try to plan for a shipment.

The Verdict: I’ve been an Unlimited member for a month and a half and already have received 12 pieces. I’ve worn them to work, for blog outfits, to Easter Sunday and date nights. This is a fun treat for myself and I see it being even more valuable with all of my summer plans. (Editor’s note: I wrote this post originally in 2015, and since then cancelled, then restarted my subscription. I’ve been a member in total for two years.)

Rocksbox Jewelry Review

Rocksbox is not a clothing rental, but a jewelry rental. I first signed up for Rocksbox using a free code from another blogger (you can use mine to do the same: sincerelyjenniexoxo). Once I tried one month, I had a great experience and was interested in seeing what else they had, so I signed up for a second month. (Now I’m an influencer partner so I receive the service for free.)

How It Works: Rocksbox is just $21 to receive a box of three pieces of jewelry hand-picked by stylists from your wishlist. You can send the stylists photos of outfits or requests and once your box is created, you can swap items before they’re sent. You can keep the jewelry as long as you want, and once done, return it in a prepaid envelope for a new box chosen by a Rocksbox stylist. The service includes jewelry by designers such as Kate Spade, Loren Hope and Kendra Scott.

The Pros: To me, $21 is a reasonable price to spend monthly and get, on average, 2-3 jewelry boxes within four weeks. I loved getting statement necklaces that I didn’t necessarily need in my closet permanently, but had a great time styling for the time being (examples here). My stylist was usually pretty spot-on, too, when choosing items for my box, or, I swap for items I’d prefer at that time.

The Cons: If you like the jewelry, you do have the opportunity to purchase it at a discounted price. And that discount is on top of a monthly $21 credit you have per month (the cost of the box) to put toward a purchase. However, I’ve only done that a few times because often the jewelry is more expensive that I’d spend myself.

The Verdict: I really liked Rocksbox and think it’s a great way to treat yourself at a low monthly cost. I have also found myself purchasing so much less jewelry – therefore saving money and on consumerism – because renting is just as fun!

Le Tote Review

(Editor’s note: This portion of the post was written in 2015, details may have changed slightly.) In full discloser, I first signed up for Le Tote (that link gives you a free box) using a code for 1/2 off and did not have a great experience. In the first month I received two totes and the dress I’m wearing in the top right photo was the only item that fit me or was of high quality. I stopped my subscription and wrote to Le Tote Customer Service. I’m now doing another trial month and have noticed they really listened to customers’ suggestions and made tweaks that improved the service.

How It Works: Le Tote is your personal stylist, sending you a box with five pieces of clothing or accessories for you to either shop from or rent. Once finished, return whatever you don’t want to keep in a prepaid USPS bag and then receive five new items. You can do this as many or as few times per month as you want.

To help your stylist select items for your tote, you fill out a style profile and your body measurements. Then, you create your virtual closet by selecting clothing and accessories in the Le Tote website. Before each tote is sent, you can see what’s in it and swap out items for similar product if you want.

Pros: Getting unlimited totes per month helps curb my shopping addiction. It also allows me to try several different designers or choose fun accessories I might be hesitant about owning for good.

Cons: I feel like Le Tote is still trying to get its model right. I believe it started as a “personal stylist” program, to help you shop from home. Now, it’s becoming more of a clothing rental/personal stylist program. There are other tweaks I’d like made, such allowing me to choose my own sizes for each item of clothing. As it stands now, a stylist does this for me based off of very loose measurements in my style profile. Another small gripe is that when the tote arrives sometimes the pieces are wrinkled.

The Verdict: For people who don’t have a lot of time to shop or would prefer someone else do it for them, I could see Le Tote being beneficial. But for someone who knows what she wants, Le Tote didn’t do it for me. I think Le Tote still needs to grow and work out some of the kinks mentioned above to appeal to the masses. But hey, they are making improvements and listening to the customers, so that might not be far off.

Great reviews!! I think you have sold me on trying Rent the Runway, especially with all the weddings that I’ve been invited to for the summer! I think you are right that you would save money signing up for these monthly subscriptions – you always want something new so this is the perfect way! 🙂

I’m currently getting Rocksbox, but I’m on my first month. The piece I really want to keep has been in rotation a little too long in my opinion. On first look, it was perfect, but the edges had been chipped a little.

      Sincerely Jennie

Thanks for sharing! Did you continue?

I’ve been using LeTote for nearly two years and love it. My experiment for this year is to not buy clothes for one year. I love the fact that LeTote allows you to swap whatever their stylists pick for you, browse what they have in stock and swap it out. I use this feature every time. I’ve tried new trends, patterns, etc. and get complimented on my clothes all the time. In swapping out, I know what I’m getting and get what suits my needs at the time. LeTote has helped me curb impulse buying. You can wear the clothing as often as you like. You can keep a piece for a reduced price if you love it. If you buy the entire tote, you get the next month free. Rarely does anything not fit. I’ve only had two pieces arrive that look like they’ve been used too often or slightly damaged. The service is ideal for those who are losing weight, want to experiment with new trends, or just want to not continue to add to their closets.

I have been using Le Tote for the past few months and I actually love it. They didn’t initially let you swap out items prior to receiving them, so I used to be surprised every time I opened the box. That was a nice update in the last couple months so we could choose something better or have the opportunity to pick out an outfit for an upcoming event (which I did for a wedding I attended). I really like the service and get to mix new pieces into my daily outfit routine that range from casual to semi formal. I previously also used to be signed up with Stitch Fix, but canceled because I got to actually wear the clothes from Le Tote before returning. Overall, I’d totally recommend.

I agree with your thoughts! I have been an Unlimited member at Rent the Runway for the past nine months and love it! The fact that you can pick what you want is amazing! My favorite thing about Unlimited is that you can complete your look with a dress, handbag, and accessory from amazing designers! 🙂

I signed up for Unlimited over 2 months ago. I am still waitlisted with no communication from their customer service, except when I have reached out. The first time the rep answered the question incorrectly saying it would take a couple weeks. The next response said “it can take any amount of time” but that typically it would be one to two months. I just sent another follow up insisting on a more specific/realistic timeline. It’s a terrible roll-out and it will be hard for the service to be good enough to take the sour taste out of my mouth. I was so excited! Really disappointing.

      Sincerely Jennie

Tia – that is disappointing! I have heard from friends that their process had taken a while, too. I know this is still in the BETA phases so it must be affecting people’s subscriptions. From my experience I’ve always had great costumer service, so I’m sorry to hear that. Hopefully the kinks get worked out soon!

Are you a unlimited member? Things you love from your queue are never available? Well logout and then login under another email. You’ll see RTR has placed restriction on unlimited members so that some Luxe items and items they deem premium are not available. When I contacted them about it, they could not justify it so they gave me a answer that made no sense. There response “the styles are not currently available to be rented through Unlimited since the styles have other reservations on them at this time. ” Clearly if I can rent them for the same dates and sizes via the classic method, they should be available via unlimited. I have contacted corporate about this. No response yet, but ladies please beware.

Update, nothing has changed, but a manager for RTR credited me one month, and said they are working on fixes to this. She was super sweet, and said this is a new venture for RTR, which is still in Beta. So hopefully in the near future we can see some changes here. Cross your fingers, as this is a cool service if they can remedy this issue.

    Hey,
How long were you on the Unlimited waiting list? I’ve been on it for a month and I’m so eager.

      szinkjel@gmail.com

Thanks for visiting. I think I was on it for about 4-6 weeks. RTR has really good customer service, so if you send them a note they may be able to give you a better estimate. Have fun!

    K

I’ve been on the RTR Unlimited wait list since March of 2015, I have sent 3 emails over the course of 8 months. First they said, it will be 3-6 weeks, then after waiting 6 weeks, they said they don’t know when i will be off the wait-list. I recently contacted them for an update, and was offered the opportunity to rent dresses the traditional way. The representative also suggested i cancel my membership as a solution. Not to thrilled with rent the runway. This seems to be an issue countless other individuals. So if you put yourself on the wait-list today, there’s no telling how long it will take for you to get your first dress.

I’m very sorry to hear that was your experience. Thanks for your thoughts!

an update to this: I did RTR unlimited from 2/15- 12/15. They started at $50 and it was a great deal considering the quality of the items I was receiving. They then increased it to $100. I didn’t like that price but again I continued with it because I liked the quality of the items. Now they’ve increased their price to $139. I’m struggling to justify it. I hate their website. It’s always freezing. Just a crappy UX. Also I had a hiccup with a return. It took them 2 weeks to credit and get me new items. At such a high monthly rate I asked for a credit for the time lost (their fault). They refused and their customer service did nothing to engage me as a customer. I dumped them. I will miss their great quality items- but it’s hard to to justify the high and increasing monthly cost + bad UX + bad customer service.

Thanks for your comment. I actually have had a great experience with their customer service, but am sorry to hear that you didn’t! I agree the price is a little too steep now.

I just started RTR Unlimited. I got my first shipment within three days. I loved the clothes, a dress and a top. I wore the dress and shipped it back. They received it very quickly and I chose another one and they shipped it the next day. I thought I would receive it in two days like the last one, but it didn’t arrive today, as expected, and the tracking shows it it’s still in NJ. Now I’m concerned because they use USPS to ship out. I love the idea though because I like to get new things all the time and think it will save me money. As long as my stuff doesn’t sit in a post office in New Jersey for days on end.

      szinkjel@gmail.com

I also had this experience a few times. They told me there is no guarantee that they can turn it around so quickly every time, which was disappointing. Reach out to customer service if you have questions. They were always very helpful! – Jennie

I’d love for you to check out our rental service called Armoire (www.armorie.style). The key difference from RTR is that we use your rental history to curate a virtual closet for you that actually has stuff in it that you want/like. So, you still get to choose, but its super efficient – we built it for busy women like you!
