Life Balance

I don’t often talk about my professional life, but I figured today could be a time to let you into that side of things. As I allude to on some of my social media accounts, I work at a communications agency where my responsibilities include public relations and digital strategies. My roles at work often bleed into what I do with my blog, and vice versa. This can be great from a professional development angle, but also extremely tough to balance everything. My coworkers often ask me how I do it all, and to be honest some weeks I just don’t know, or I just can’t! For those weeks when I do need to do it all, I’ve learned what I need and where I need to make sacrifices. Keep reading to learn more.

When you work in communications, the work never really stops. Thankfully I work at an agency that understands the value of their employees’ work/life balance, so I’m able to log off of email at night or spend my weekends for myself. But still, that doesn’t mean there won’t be a media crisis we need to deal with after hours or an annual meeting we’ll have to travel to over the weekend. Knowing this, I often have to work ahead on my blog when I can so that I have posts ready to go. When this doesn’t happen (often), I have to leave work and know I’ll be logging back on the computer when I get home for my personal work. But since blogging is a hobby I choose for fun, that’s normally OK! But when mixing in social events and blog-related invites, some weeks can be really busy.

Since I’m often on the go or spending long hours working, I have come up with several personal things I need to make sure I’m still taking care of myself. I thought they might help you too, if you’re busy or want some tips on how to “do it all.”

  1. Don’t over commit. This can be a tough when there’s so many fun things to do! Some weeks I have work obligations, then race off to a blogger event and finish by writing a blog post. That’s great, but I can quickly get tired out when I’m on the run. I’ve learned that I need to listen to my body and know when I need to recharge with “me time.” Maybe it’s working out or maybe it’s just vegging out. Know your limit and what helps re-energive you!
  2. Snack smarter. Since I am often on the go or grabbing food at my desk, I have to make a special effort to pack healthy food that will fill me up. In the last few months I’ve started stocking up on Chobani yogurt because it hits a lot of needs. My favorite Chobani yogurt is the “flip” kind. It’s delicious while being guilt-free and curbs my stress eating cravings. (It’s true, I’m a huge stress eater! That’s why I love to have the coffee or chocolate yogurt flavors on hand.) I can opt for a really sweet flip or choose one of the “Simply 100” yogurts that still offer something extra than just yogurt.
  3. Save time for fun. Do your hobbies ever start to feel more like obligations and not fun? Maybe that workout class you love has started to get stale, or you don’t feel like you’re getting anywhere in your volunteer activities. Hobbies (for example, my blog) are something you’re meant to be things you’re passionate about and still help you grow. If your typical routine isn’t doing that for you anymore, assess why and how you can change that. Sometimes I take weeks off from the blog to reset. Or, I come up with new ways to explore content. You want to make sure the obligations you put on yourself are actually things you feel compelled to do.

I hope these tips help you balance your professional vs. personal balance. And please, share your secrets for excelling in both!
